Imbal Carton Embarks on the Future with "Factory of Tomorrow"

Imbal Carton, a historic company based in Brescia, Italy, specializing in the production of corrugated cardboard packaging, is setting its sights on the future with an ambitious project underway. The company is solidifying plans for a new state-of-the-art facility spanning 20,000 square meters in Piadena Drizzona, Cremona. This venture, in collaboration with the German multinational Progrup Ag, marks a significant milestone for Imbal Carton, already operating a second branch with its headquarters in Prevalle. Construction is set to commence next year, with a turnkey delivery expected by 2026. The project entails an investment of 15 million euros, including machinery, and will create 50 new jobs initially. The ultimate goal, once fully operational, is to nearly double production output to around 140 million square meters of transformed corrugated cardboard annually.

Michele Lancellotti, President and CEO of Imbal Carton, unveils the company's vision and objectives. "This marks another step forward in line with our industrial plan," he explains, detailing an annual growth target of 8% to reach a turnover of 100 million euros by 2030. The new facility will house between 7 and 8 new production lines, incorporating cutting-edge automation. Lancellotti emphasizes the avant-garde design, including the implementation of a digital twin, empowered by artificial intelligence through an investment of approximately 100,000 euros. This digital twin will enable comprehensive analysis of all production and logistical aspects, enhancing efficiency and foresight.

However, innovation is not limited to the new Piadena Drizzona facility. Imbal Carton is also dedicated to enhancing its central headquarters in Prevalle. Fire safety measures are already underway, with the application of intumescent paint in a 6,000-square-meter internal area, slated for completion by March, requiring a 400,000-euro investment. Additionally, construction will soon commence on a new company canteen, equipped with a meeting room, representing a further investment of 600,000 euros.

Reflecting on the recent year's performance, Lancellotti acknowledges the challenges posed by the corrugated cardboard market, which experienced a 7% national decline in 2023. Despite this, Imbal Carton managed to exceed 2022 volumes by 1% in the final quarter. However, a slowdown in turnover is anticipated, expected to decrease from 67.8 million euros in 2022 to 60 million euros. Lancellotti attributes this primarily to declining selling prices and rising raw material costs, with 90% of their materials sourced from recycled paper.

Imbal Carton's commitment extends beyond financial metrics to encompass sustainability and social responsibility. The company transitioned to a Benefit Corporation in 2022, aligning its business model with common benefit and impact objectives. Investments in sustainability management and environmental impact assessments underscore the company's dedication to responsible resource management.

Furthermore, Imbal Carton maintains partnerships with local cultural and sporting institutions, supporting initiatives such as those with Brescia Musei and Fondazione Comunità Bresciana, as well as local basketball teams and the Gian Castagna memorial. Additionally, the company contributes to charitable efforts in Nepal led by mountaineer Fausto De Stefani.

Imbal Carton employs approximately 170 individuals, all of whom will soon receive a 1,000-euro welfare bonus in recognition of their contributions. Regarding employee welfare, discussions are underway regarding the establishment of an on-site daycare facility, in collaboration with other local companies in Prevalle.

In conclusion, Imbal Carton's pursuit of the "Factory of Tomorrow" represents a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and social responsability. Through strategic investments, technological advancements, and a focus on employee welfare, Imbal Carton is poised to lead the corrugated cardboard packaging industry into a prosperous and sustainable future.
